With another election cycle around the corner, candidates and issue advocates are gearing up to win hearts, minds, and votes. But while most campaigns focus on strategy, fundraising, and being “right” on the issues, one of the biggest factors in success gets overlooked: how you communicate.
Whether you’re trying to persuade voters, bring coalition partners on board, secure endorsements, or close with donors, communication is everything. Not just what you say but how you make people feel.
Too often, campaigns fall into the trap of trying to prove a point. They forget that people aren’t swayed by facts alone. If you come off as aggressive or condescending, you can win the argument and still lose the support.
You’re not talking to a spreadsheet. You’re talking to a human being. And people support candidates they connect with—people they like.
Here are a few reminders to help keep your communication on point this election season:
- Be respectful. Be presentable. Don’t smell bad.
- Listen more than you talk. Let people finish their thoughts.
- Ask questions. Show genuine interest in their concerns.
- Speak to their reality—not just your platform.
- Share real stories, not rehearsed talking points.
There’s always a time to make your case and stand firm on your values. But if people don’t feel like you care, they won’t care what you stand for.
It’s been said: people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. That applies to politics more than most things.
